A Challenger Appears: Google's O3D

Hot on the heels of Mozilla/Khronos' attempt to embed OpenGL in firefox comes the release of Google's 2 year effort to make a 3d plugin for web browsers.

Their api is higher level than OpenGL, making most of the decisions for you.

You can see a demo video and download the O3D plugin here:

and read a review here

3d web is now. All we need is some decent content and a way to find our way to it.

Abunadant 3D content
There is lots of awesome 3D content on the web already. Other 3D plug-ins, like Unity, are very mature and popular at this point. Popular indie games like Off-Road Velociraptor Safari and RC Laser Warrior have used the Unity 3D technology to show amazing 3D graphics in the browser. But also huge franchises flock to Unity: Cartoon Networks even made their fullblown MMO FusionFall ( http://www.fusionfall.com ) as a 3D in-browser game with Unity.

It's also interesting how Google's Beach Demo looks similar to Unity's vast Tropical Paradise Demo (except this one is a huge island and has collision physics):

Nevertheless it will be interesting to see where things will be going with an open source project like O3D!
