on steampunk and oil

the thing that is interesting about steampunk as an aesthetic is that it depicts a low oil society. Brass and leather, where the clothes last a hundred years and throwaway plastics are unheard of. Maybe when the oil crunch hits, we will all dress like that.

I wonder how the consumer ethic would last in those circumstances. It would be nice for rapid social change but I don't think society at large would cope too well - economic meltdown on any level wouldnt be fun, but oh I can dream of a world made from steampunk.
