I had a dream last night about finding the integral by taking the derivative at the x intercepts and then making triangles. This tended to overestimate the integral so the instructor decided to take the derivative everywhere and divide up the area under the curve into smaller and smaller trapeziums. I'm pretty sure I've never been taught to do integrals this way.

You're describing Simpson's Rule which I recall being taught as part of Spec. Maths or possibly 1st year.

It's an approximation method, but it gives better approximations than using triangles.
