Police yesterday called for witnesses to the crime, which occurred as hundreds of commuters filed past during peak hour.

The man's body lay for hours near the entrance to the station, which is a key commuter hub on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines.

Railway kiosk owner Paul Kennedy said three commuters stopped to help the wounded man, as others continued to file past.

"Everyone's in a hurry at a railway station," he said.

Clayton railway station has emerged as a transport trouble spot in Melbourne's southern suburbs.
