This stunningly detailed image manages to get both the highlight and shadow areas in perfect clarity by taking photos at a whole bunch of f stops and then using gradient domain high dynamic range compression to put them together. it was done with a consumer digital camera.

greg downing reports he was able to get the same result at the push of one button using a spheron spherocam which is a camera with a fish eye lense that rotates around a central axis and takes the multiple exposures at different f stops for you.

My question is: what would happen if you coupled a spherocam-like rig with LIDAR

That way you'd get the true luminosity and distance of every pixel in every direction around your detector.

Then you keep cycling your detector through its sweep and walk around to generate a whole bunch of spherical capturesets from various geographical locations.

and fed the results through something like Bundler (which is basically GPL photosynth) except hacked to accept the LIDAR data so it doesn't have to guess as hard about the range to each pixel.

I think you'd be able to create rather detailed 3d environments from capture data in a shockingly short time. Heck, if you could sweep the detector fast enough without blurring or smearing, you could have 3d environmental movies.

3D cam
some archaeologists have mapped out a 3D walk through model of part fo a catacomb under rome.it has terrific detail of the paintings on the walls and they can go to any part of the catacomb by selection or rotate the model for different angles.apparently they used some kind of camera that emmitted rays to capture the image.sorry my techospeak is very blurr but i'm sure you can search for the details.
